What Is Broadform Insurance?
Broadform Insurance is insurance for a specific driver (you) to drive owned and non-owned private passenger vehicles instead of insuring a specific car. Broadform Insurance is commonly called “Drivers License Insurance” because it covers the named insured and is not limited to the cars listed on a normal car insurance policy.

Broad Form Insurance is an inexpensive way you can meet the Washington state liability insurance requirements whether you own many cars or no cars and for this reason broadform policies are popular for those who require an SR22 filing to reinstate their license.

So, whether you own a car or not, you can insure your drivers license and be insured to drive most any car!

What Does Broad Form Insurance Cover?
Broad Form Insurance provides the same liability insurance coverage options that a regular car insurance policy provides, meaning, if you cause an accident, your insurance company will pay for the claim up to your insurance policy limits. In Washington, you must carry at least 25,000 per person bodily injury liability and 10,000 property damage liability.

A broadform policy is just a regular car insurance policy with a few amendments. Instead of having to list every car you own, it covers you while driving any car you own (or don't own) but only while you are driving. So the policy is only active while you, the named insured, are driving. If anyone else is driving a car you own, your broadform insurance policy does not provide any coverage whatsoever.

On a Broadform insurance policy, Uninsured Motorist and Personal Injury Protection (PIP) medical are optional but highly recommended. The state only cares that you protect others. These coverages protect you and your passengers.

FYI, Companies like Progressive, The General, Geico, State Farm, etc. do not offer BroadForm policies although they may offer Non-Owned Vehicle type of Drivers License Insurance but it is designed only for people who don’t have regular access to a car. We do not recommend this kind of policy because it is far too restrictive.
